All our children are “Digital Natives”. They are growing up in a time when social media and technology is ‘the norm’. At St Martin’s School, we are preparing our children for their digital future in a safe and rewarding way. We work closely with Middlesex University who have provided Coding training and UAL (University of Arts) who have provided writing, filming and directing opportunities for our children. After school clubs such as Coding, Stop Motion Film Production and animation and filming further add to our children’s digital experience.
We have a strong relationship with UAL (University of the Arts.) This allows for film to become a part of our curriculum. It is introduced in a cross-curricular capacity; writing film scripts, narrative and editing (Literacy) learning about lighting, sound and film (Science) and acting and design (The Arts). Our children are able to work on professional films with mainstream directors, as well as making their own films in school. The UAL is considered to be one of the best universities in the country for filmmaking, with many of their students going on to become leading lights in the industry. As part of this aspect of our curriculum we also visit the university where the children can explore the studio and sets. This part of the curriculum encompasses a maximum of 3 days per term.
Coding is taught through the use of ‘Scratch.’ We have also forged a link with the University of Middlesex who have assisted with Digital Research projects involving robots. We also use Raspberry Pi machines throughout the school.
We take E-Safety very seriously, not least because this is an evolving threat. Every child has signed our E-Safety Agreement confirming they will abide by our rules when going on line. We teach the children how to stay safe online and how to respond to cyber bullying. As part of our commitment, in conjunction with FoSMS (Friends of St Martin’s School) we organise an ‘E-Safety Day.’ We also ensure that we also exceed the DFE’s advice on e-safety.
